It's motivating and energizing to know why we do what we do. It's deeply meaningful to strive for integrity. This isn't just pride, it's power! It's also contagious: we love working with value-aligned brothers and sisters doing our good work together.
As First Responders, we've got to maintain balance. The job's plenty demanding; but it's much harder if we don't understand or think about our own values. It pays to dive deep once in a while, to understand and cultivate our core values.
Understanding is gained thru familiarity with our inner lives; it's not just a Code of Conduct we swear to. It's deeper than that. These values, codified in our Ethics statements, are not just some document to fill our files or hang on a wall; it's a way of being, a way of acting, a way of living.
The Inner Toolkit is about cultivating our self-awareness and values by focusing on where they actually exist: at levels within us that are not often talked about. Nor are they developed nearly as systematically as are our outer skills, our professional skills and public conduct.
We train the Inner Responder not for the easy days, but for the hard ones, and for the long-run too. And we do this as professionals. A mark of a professional—even a requirement—is to explicitly commit to a special Code of Ethics. (source)
Below is a brief list of such codes. These are beautiful, deeply personal, core values that are shared across all our First Responder services. Notice how high we aim! Then, ask yourself: what sort of tools, skills, reps, practices, views, and behaviors do I need to build so that I can live up to these values more fully?
